Wanted: PhD students for SMARTI ETN project!

EAL is participating as a partner in SMARTI ETN and is looking for a PhD candidate!

EAL is participating as a partner in the Sustainable Multi-functional Automated and Resilient Transport Infrastructure (SMARTI) European Training Network (ETN). EAL will provide a secondment in the project on computational design and characterisation of rheologically complex emerging materials to enhance durability and resiliency of transport infrastructure technologies. All projects are open for applicants who are interested in doing a PhD project in transport!

The world’s surface transport network has developed over thousands of years; emerging from the need of allowing more comfortable trips to roman soldiers to the modern infrastructure enabling modern vehicles to travel at high speed. However, in the last two decades, the world is changing very fast in terms of population growth, mobility and business trades creating greater traffic volumes and demand for minimal disruption to users, but also challenges such as climate change and more extreme weather events. At the same time, developments in digitalisation, vehicle design, mobile and wireless communications, and sensor technologies continue apace. It is within this environment and in close consultation with key stakeholders, that this consortium considers it of paramount importance to shift to Sustainable Multi-functional Automated Resilient Transport Infrastructures.

The SMARTI European Training Network aims at conceiving and exploiting this vision by forming 15 early stage researchers within a stimulating platform where key stakeholders of the transport infrastructure sector will work alongside worldwide experts in smartening of systems (developers of high-tech sensors, advanced monitoring equipment, automated structures, etc.,) with direct support from the roads, railways, and airports managers.

The SMARTI ETN consortium will offer a training-through-research path that NO standard PhD programme can provide:

  • a research framework tailored around the SMARTI vision
  • a strategically shaped training platform involving worldwide renown scientist and crafted to provide fellows with state-of-the-art professional development
  • a communication strategy that will provide them with maximum exposure and will train them to successfully disseminate their work worldwide and to different audiences

SMARTI ETN is seeking 15 brilliant motivated curious graduates with a multi-disciplinary background (preferably in engineering), holding a degree that can allow them to enroll in a PhD programme and who are keen to spend three years of their life in growing their career in a truly joint academia-industry context at European level. Candidates are expected to speak and write English fluently. Language certification such as IELTS is desirable and for some of the projects, it will be necessary in order to be enrolled in the PhD programme of some of the partner Universities. Check the eligibility criteria on the SMARTI ETN website.

Recruitment process will be performed through the project website and WILL BE OPEN BETWEEN MARCH 15 AND MAY 31 2017.

All the researchers are planned to be in place and START BETWEEN SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER 2017

Are You SMARTI enough?
